More people will have to work to access SNAP food stamps: we explain who and since when

A tightening of the requirements of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) — widely known as ‘food stamps’ — approved during the fight over the ‘debt ceiling’ will only go into effect this coming October. Starting that month, people aged 53 and 54 without dependents must work at least 20 hours a week (or 80 a month) to access this key benefit for low-income households.
