(CNN) — A low-calorie sweetener called xylitol, used in many low-sugar foods and consumer products such as chewing gum and toothpaste, may be linked to a nearly two-fold increased risk of heart attack, stroke and death in people who consume the highest levels of the sweetener, according to a new study.

“We gave healthy volunteers a typical drink with xylitol to see how high the levels went and they increased 1,000-fold,” said the study’s lead author, Dr. Stanley Hazen, director of the Center for Cardiovascular Diagnostics and Prevention at the Lerner Research Institute. from the Cleveland Clinic.
