Medicare decides to cover Wegovy, the injectable weight-loss drug that also reduces the risk of heart problems.

Medicare will pay for the injectable drug Wegovy for patients at higher risk of heart attacks, strokes, or other serious heart-related issues, a spokesperson for the agency announced Thursday.

The decision, according to experts, could provide access to millions of patients to this popular but expensive weight-loss medication.

Medicare, which currently provides health insurance to over 65 million people in the United States, has long not covered weight-loss medications.

Earlier this month, however, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved coverage for Wegovy, stating that it can be prescribed to overweight or obese individuals to reduce the risk of heart disease.
